Chirk

My work has been always about engaging the viewer.

When I painted pictures of arches they were devoid of living beings which enabled the viewer, without distraction, to own and inhabit the space on the canvass. At that time I used photography to gather interesting views for my paintings but I was drawn, very often, to smaller intriguing objects people see but are not necessarily aware of.

Some of my photographs are of real things but they are photographed from an unusual angle or up very close thereby hiding the context of the subject matter. The viewer experiences the subject matter in a way they would normally not if left to their own devices. The beautiful image here is a section of a wooden post at Chirk castle which most people just walk by!

Angel

This second photograph ‘Angel’ is representative of photographs I take of decaying metal. Using post production techniques I create images which are far removed from the original object. These images often provoke in people very different experience and interpretation than I had expected. This picture was inspired by a section of an old metal gate in Donnybrook.
